Using Over Skirts to Dress up a Look

Nikki HarrisonComment

I am the Queen of Overskirts!  I love them, and make them all the time.

An over skirt is a simple piece of fabric that uses pinned layers to create "pleates". After you can fasten it over top of another dress or skirt to dress it up.

Below are a few examples of overskirts I have made for photography.

I purchased the gold lace on sale, and planned to place it over top of this particular black skirt that I had. I also made the crown out of Worbla, and hand painted it. This was from my workshop in Italy in May 2017, so I needed a crown that would lay flat in my suitcase so it wouldn't get wrecked during the travel.

Styling and Wardrobe DIY

Creating a wardrobe is not difficult. It is, in fact no only easy but super fun!  I have been making my own wardrobe for years now, and enjoy it immensely.

Teaming up simple corset's with tulle skirts is pretty common. It is also pretty easy. Pairing with costume jewelry and accessories can make your client feel like a Queen, which is what we all want.

Think outside the box! I never look at wardrobe for its intended conventional use, I'm always thinking of ways for alternative uses for certain items, like this boa.

Fabric! I use simple pieces of fabric all the time, with safety pins and create looks! Super easy, and looks amazing. The following portraits are of my mother, I didn't have a dress that fit her so I took panels of curtains and pinned them various ways to create a pretty look.

I covered a straw sun hat with tulle to match the color scheme and hot glued flowers on it.
